6.0 Operating Systems (OS)

Imagine your computer or smartphone. It's a powerful machine, but it can't do anything without instructions. That's where the Operating System (OS) comes in! The OS is the most important software on any computer. Think of it as the brain or the boss of your device.

When you turn on your computer, the OS is the first thing that loads. It's like the conductor of an orchestra, making sure all the different parts of the computer (the keyboard, mouse, screen, hard drive, memory, programs) work together smoothly. Without an OS, your computer would just be a pile of metal and plastic!

Common Operating Systems you might know are:

  • Windows (for many laptops and desktop computers)
  • macOS (for Apple computers)
  • Linux (used by many servers and developers)
  • iOS (for iPhones)
  • Android (for most other smartphones and tablets)
